About Us

The Maine Wood Treaters, Inc. was founded in 1983 when company CEO Harold "Hal" Bumby moved from Minnesota to Maine with a simple goal: to be the "northern treaters of northern species." A lifelong treater, Hal was lured to Maine by the promise of treating Red Pine and Eastern Hemlock.

With the Red Pine plantations not fully developed, the company's initial success was found as a Treatment Service Only (TSO) treater of incised hemlock landscape timbers. As the original treater of hemlock, MWT saw growth to 3,500 annual truckloads of landscape timbers, and helped pioneer the addition of these species into the AWPA Book of Standards.

In 1997, as a result of changing market demographics and demands, MWT began to operate as a more "traditional" treater, purchasing, treating, and reselling Southern Yellow Pine (SYP). Although the landscape timber business remained, this transition to SYP saw Maine Wood Treaters gain considerable market share throughout New England in the early 2000's.

Over the years, Maine Wood Treaters grew and diversified while keeping a focus on quality and sustainability. Key items including fence posts, poles, and piling were added to the company's inventory, while new treatments allowed us to reach a broader market base. 

​

In 2021, Maine Wood Treaters came full-circle with the acquisition of the former Tukey Brothers Sawmill in Belgrade, Maine. The sawmill allows us to produce timbers and boards from locally sourced Red Pine. Treating local, sustainable timber has been at the heart of Maine Wood Treaters' mission and this evolution has enhanced our company's ability to do just that.

In 2023, with a focus on the future, our family of companies officially rebranded as the MEWood Family of Companies. Under this umbrella are our treating plant, operating as MEWood Treaters, and our sawmill, operating as MEWood Timber & Posts. Together, the MEWood Family of Companies works to provide the highest quality pressure treated lumber solutions from our own back yard.
